Proper handling

  • When taking a new pen needle, remove the hygiene seal first.
  • Then screw the pen needle on your insulin pen (fits all standard pens) and remove the outer needle protection cap.
  • Using NPH- or premixed insulin the insulin pen has to be swayed very slowly to achieve complete mixing of the insulin. In clear, transparent insulins this step is not necessary.
  • After withdrawing the outer needle protection cap the continuity test has to be performed. To do this, set two units of insulin on the pen and inject it into the air. Repeat this process until insulin drops will appear at the tip of the needle.
  • Now, the required insulin dose can be set on the pen. Insert the needle into the skin (for more information see "How is insulin injected correctly?") and press the release button of the pen.
  • Count down from 10 and remove then the needle from the skin. When injecting into a skin fold do hold the fold all the time while you count down from 10.
  • Now unscrew the used needle from the pen  - you can use the outer protective cap. Dispose the needle now in a safe collection container.
